How Often Does Each Planet Actually Go Retrograde?
"Retrograde" isn't a scientifically validated influence on daily life, but the underlying orbital mechanics are real — and Mercury, Venus, and Mars don't retrograde anywhere near the same amount.
Why the frequencies are so different
Retrograde is an optical illusion caused by Earth overtaking a slower outer planet, or a faster inner planet overtaking Earth, on its orbit — not the planet actually reversing direction. How often it happens depends on each planet's synodic cycle relative to Earth: Mercury's is about 116 days, so it retrogrades three to four times a year for roughly three weeks each time. Venus's synodic cycle is about 584 days — once every 19 months or so, lasting around 40 days. Mars's is about 780 days — once every 26 months, lasting two to two-and-a-half months.
Why some years have no Mars retrograde at all
Because Mars's cycle runs longer than a calendar year, plenty of individual years simply don't contain a Mars retrograde window — 2026 is one of them, with the next one not starting until January 2027. That's not a gap in the data; it's what a 780-day cycle actually looks like mapped onto 365-day years.
