How Two Trigrams Become Your I Ching Hexagram
A hexagram looks like six stacked lines, broken or unbroken, and left at that it's easy to read as decoration. It isn't. Every one of the 64 King Wen hexagrams is built from two specific 3-line trigrams, one stacked on the other, and that pairing is the actual structure Synastri's `/i-ching` tool stores and reads from.
Eight trigrams, three lines each
A trigram is a stack of three lines, each either broken or unbroken, giving 8 possible combinations. Each of the 8 has a name and a traditional natural-force association: Qian (Heaven), Kun (Earth), Zhen (Thunder), Kan (Water), Gen (Mountain), Xun (Wind), Li (Fire), and Dui (Lake). These same 8 trigrams are what the entire 64-hexagram King Wen sequence is built from — nothing else goes into it.
A hexagram is two trigrams, upper and lower
Stack one trigram on top of another and you get a hexagram — 6 lines total. Synastri's own hexagram data stores exactly this: every one of the 64 entries has an upper trigram and a lower trigram, not just a flat 6-line pattern. Hexagram 11, traditionally called Peace, is Kun (Earth) above Qian (Heaven) — read as Earth's energy sinking and Heaven's energy rising, meeting in the middle.
Why order matters: the same two trigrams, reversed
8 trigrams stacked two at a time gives 64 possible pairs, and which trigram sits on top isn't interchangeable with which sits on the bottom. Flip hexagram 11's pair around — Qian (Heaven) above Kun (Earth) instead — and you get hexagram 12, traditionally called Standstill: the two forces now moving apart instead of meeting. Same two trigrams, opposite reading, purely from which one is on top.
What this doesn't decide
None of this determines which hexagram lands on a given birth date — that's a separate, disclosed modern calendar convention, covered honestly in `/blog/is-your-birthday-hexagram-real-i-ching`. The trigram pairing above is just the real structure every hexagram is built from, whichever one you land on.
