Pythagorean vs Chaldean Numerology: What's the Real Difference?
Type the same name into two different numerology calculators and you can get two different name-based numbers. That's not a bug in either one — Pythagorean and Chaldean numerology assign letters to numbers using genuinely different systems, built centuries apart on different logic.
Pythagorean: alphabetical order, cycling 1-9
The Pythagorean system, the more common one today, assigns letters to numbers in simple alphabetical order: A through I get 1 through 9, then the cycle repeats — J through R get 1 through 9 again, and S through Z pick up where that left off. It's tidy and easy to verify by hand, which is a large part of why it's the default most calculators use.
Chaldean: grouped by sound, and 9 is never assigned
The older Chaldean system doesn't follow alphabetical order at all — letters are grouped by their vibrational sound according to the tradition, so letters that sound similar share a number regardless of where they fall in the alphabet. It also deliberately never assigns any letter the number 9, treating it as too sacred or complete to hand to an individual letter. Because the groupings don't match the Pythagorean cycle, the same name can land on a different Expression or Soul Urge number under each system.
Which one to use
Neither system is more "correct" in a way that can be proven — they're two different traditions computing two different real numbers from the same letters, not one right answer and one wrong one.
