Why the Moon moves so much faster than the Sun
The Sun takes about a month to cross one zodiac sign; the Moon does it in roughly two and a quarter days, since it orbits the Earth in about 27.3 days rather than the Sun's roughly-365-day cycle. That means the Moon's sign can change more than once within a single week, and on the day it does change, the exact hour of the crossing matters.
What that means for a date-only calculation
A Moon sign computed from birth date alone — which is what most "quick" calculators, including Synastri's daily reading, actually do — lands correctly for most people, but for anyone born on a day the Moon happens to change sign, the true answer depends on the exact birth time, which a date-only lookup simply doesn't have. Ascendant and house placements need both exact birth time and location for the same reason, which is why Synastri doesn't offer them — the Moon sign is the borderline case where date alone is usually, but not always, enough.
