Why There Are 8 Moon Phases, Not Just 4

The other six aren't decoration — they're the real vocabulary astronomers use for where the Moon sits in its monthly cycle, and each name encodes actual information about how much of it is lit and whether that's growing or shrinking.

Four exact moments, and the four gaps between them

Four of the eight phases are precise instants: new moon (0% illuminated, the Moon between Earth and Sun), first quarter (exactly half-lit, illumination growing), full moon (100% illuminated), and last quarter (exactly half-lit, illumination shrinking). But the Moon spends almost all of its time between these four points, not at them — so astronomy names the four gaps too: waxing crescent, waxing gibbous, waning gibbous, and waning crescent. Together, the eight cover the whole cycle, not just its landmarks.

What waxing/waning and crescent/gibbous each mean

Waxing means the lit portion is growing night to night — the Moon is moving from new toward full. Waning means it's shrinking — moving from full back toward new. Crescent and gibbous describe how much is lit at that moment, independent of direction: crescent is under 50% illuminated, a thin sliver; gibbous is over 50%, a bulging near-full shape. So "waxing gibbous" is unambiguous — more than half lit and still growing toward full — and "waning crescent" is a thin sliver still shrinking toward new. Each in-between name pairs one word from each pair, which is exactly why there are four of them and not two.

How the 8 map onto a 29.53-day month

The Moon takes about 29.53 days to cycle from one new moon to the next — its synodic month, measured relative to the Sun rather than the stars. Splitting that cycle into 8 equal slices gives each phase roughly 3.7 days at a time.
