How Your Kua Directions Are Chosen: East Group vs. West Group

The eight directions split into two fixed camps

In classical Eight Mansions (Ba Zhai) Feng Shui, the eight compass directions are permanently divided into two groups: an East group (north, south, east, southeast) and a West group (northeast, southwest, northwest, west). Your Kua number falls into one group or the other — 1, 3, 4, and 9 are East group; 2, 6, 7, and 8 are West group. Whichever group you're in, those four directions are your auspicious ones, and the other group's four are your inauspicious ones. There's no in-between and no mixing.

What actually changes between Kua numbers isn't the directions

This is the part most explanations skip: every East-group Kua number (1, 3, 4, 9) shares the exact same four good directions and the same four bad ones — north, south, east, and southeast are always the favorable set, always. What differs from number to number is which specific quality — Sheng Chi (success/wealth), Tien Yi (health), Nien Yen (relationships), or Fu Wei (stability) — gets assigned to which of those four directions. Kua 1's best direction for wealth is southeast; Kua 9's best direction for wealth is east. Same four compass points, reshuffled roles. The West group (2, 6, 7, 8) works identically among its own four.

Where the East/West split comes from

This grouping isn't a modern invention or something built for this site — it traces back to the Later Heaven Bagua, the eight trigram arrangement used throughout traditional Chinese metaphysics. Four trigrams cluster into what's called the East group, four into the West group, and the Eight Mansions system inherited that division wholesale, along with the specific direction-to-quality mapping for each Kua number. It's a centuries-old, internally consistent framework — the mechanics are real and well documented.
