Hagalaz means "hail" and opens the Futhark's second aett with the row's most disruptive symbol — hail damages crops without warning or malice, a force of nature indifferent to plans. It's traditionally read as change nobody asked for, arriving anyway.

Someone born under Hagalaz is traditionally read as resilient to exactly this kind of disruption — not because upheaval doesn't hit them, but because they've learned it clears ground the way a storm does, however unwelcome at the time. The classical reading treats Hagalaz as neither good nor bad on its own, only ever the necessary, uncomfortable reset before whatever comes next.
